Web28 Nov 2024 · In 2016, artist André Saraiva installed Lisbon’s largest expanse of azulejos in the Motto Machado Gardens — an 11,625-square-foot mural. It was commissioned by MUDE, the local museum of design and fashion. It’s a playful, whimsical sight. “The wall is my dream city,” explains Saraiva, who’s also known as Mr. A. Webazulejo, (from Arabic al - zulayj, “little stone”), Spanish and later principally Portuguese tiles produced from the 14th century onward. At first the term was used to denote only North African mosaics, but it became the accepted word for an entirely decorated tile about 5 to 6 inches (13 to 15 cm) square.

In 1987, the painting was created on 40 pieces of ceramic and can be found at the Ribeira tunnel entrance, right next to the famous Luiz I bridge.
